Rio Grande Regional Hospital (RGRH) is proudly leading the way in making McAllen a medical destination as the premiere facility for robotic surgeries in SouthTexas. Combining a surgeon’s skilled hands with advanced technology and a dedicated robotic team, ensures the highest quality of care for our patients.
In 2014, RGRH partnered with the Texas Institute for Robotic Surgery in acquiring the daVinci Surgical Robot to offer our community the latest alternative to traditional surgery. The daVinci System offers RGRH surgeons unequaled precision, helping them perform the most delicate procedures through tiny incisions with dramatically enhanced vision, accuracy and control. For instance, daVinci single-site surgery enables doctors to remove the gallbladder or uterus through a small incision in the patient’s bellybutton.
This capacity inspired Gabriela Zamora, aHouston resident, to travel to McAllen to have her surgical procedure performed at RGRH. After consulting with Rene Luna, M.D., medical director of Rio Grande Women’s Clinic in Alamo, she learned she was a perfect candidate for single-site surgery.
“When Dr. Luna assured me I would only have a scar in my belly button, I did not think twice about it,” she said. “I didn’t hesitate to travel to McAllen. Dr. Luna made me feel comfortable deciding the single-site surgery was the right and best option for me.”
There are many benefits to robotic surgery, including less scarring, reduced pain and blood loss, a shorter hospital stay, and a faster recovery. “For the patient, having a single site incision looks fantastic cosmetically. There is no visible scarring,” said Luna. “l am excited to offer this surgical option to our community and to be one of the few physicians consistently performing this complex procedure south of San Antonio.
